  1. 1884-1972. 33rd president of the USA 1945-53,
  2. a Democrat. In Jan 1945 he became vice
  3. president to F D Roosevelt, and president
  4. when Roosevelt died in Apr that year. He used
  5. the atom bomb against Japan, launched the
  6. Marshall Plan to restore W Europe's economy,
  7. and nurtured the European Community and NATO
  8. (including the rearmament of West Germany).
  9. Born in Lamar, Missouri, he ran a clothing
  10. store that was bankrupted by the Great
  11. Depression. He became a senator 1934, was
  12. selected as Roosevelt's last vice president,
  13. and in 1948 was elected for a second term in
  14. a surprise victory over Thomas Dewey
  15. (1902-1971), the governor of New York. At
  16. home, he had difficulty converting the
  17. economy back to peacetime conditions, and
  18. failed to prevent the witch-hunts on
  19. suspected communists (see Hiss, Joe
  20. McCarthy). In Korea, he intervened when the
  21. South was invaded, but sacked General
  22. MacArthur when the general's policy
  23. threatened to start World War III. Truman's
  24. decision not to enter Chinese territory,
  25. betrayed by the double agent Kim Philby, led
  26. to China's entry into the war. Truman had a
  27. sign on his desk that said: `The buck stops
  28. here.'
